Mental & Emotional Conditions Helped with Homeopathy

Homeopathy has a lot to offer in the treatment and management of patients that suffer with depression and anxiety.  In presenting these few cases, I aim to show how well homeopathy can be used in the treatment of  these chronic conditions. Click on any one of them to take you to that particular case history to see what the case was like and the response after treatment:

1.    A Case of Long Standing Depression

Female aged 66yrs old

Long standing depression for over 7yrs. This started after the death of her son-in-law and her daughter leaving the family mould to join another religious organisation. Her daughter moved away, severing all ties with the family and not wanting to associate with them.

This patient was devastated by her daughter’s decision to leave her family and religion and join another. She felt she couldn’t come to terms with it. It constantly played on her mind, feeling hopeless, despairing and even suicidal. She felt that she had let her daughter and family down by allowing this to occur and could not come to terms with the decision her daughter had made.

She had taken anti-depressants, had seen psychologists and psychiatrists to no avail.

She felt there was nothing left in her life, nothing to look forward to in this depressed state. She felt others would stand in judgement of her and this played heavily on her mind

Treatment:
After a couple of months of homeopathic treatment her depression lifted, she felt more at ease with her daughter’s decision and could accept the path she had taken. Her feelings of self-worth, failure, and resulting depression all improved. Overall, she felt calmer and more at peace with-in herself.

2.    Chronic Endogenous Depression

Male aged 76yrs old

Presents with chronic endogenous depression. These symptoms have been occurring for around 20yrs and are getting worse. He has been on Prozac, Zoloft as well as other anti-depressants which all upset his stomach and so is not taking anything. He also sees a psychiatrist.

He wakes in the mornings feeling disorientated, confused and has difficulty deciding what to do. He feels depressed the whole day as well as worrying about lots of different things. His worries also focus on what he wants to do, feeling not sure as to where to start with the activities he has for the day. He wakes feeling emotionally numb, lacking interest and drive about life.

At times because of how depressed he feels, he wishes that he was dead.

He finds it hard to concentrate and remember things. He puts something down and forgets where he left it.

He also suffered with stomach pains that wake him every night. During the day he gets indigestion and heartburn. He has trouble going to sleep partly because of the worries that play on his mind.

Treatment:
This case responded to the homeopathic medicine very quickly. After around 8 weeks his depression completely cleared, as well as his digestive disturbances and sleep difficulties. His worries and confusion lifted so that he was clearer in his thinking and able to make plans for himself. Instead of the dark moods that prevailed he felt that he was able to greet the day with optimism and felt brighter overall.

The above case was an edited version that was published in the Australian Homeopathic Association Journal, Similia.

3.    Chronic Anxiety Managed with Homeopathy

Female aged 23yrs old.

Has always suffered with anxiety. She would go through phases when she was OK, then she would feel it come on suddenly. When this happens she would develop irrational thoughts, losing her sense of rationality, working herself into a state to the point of panic. She would stress about all sorts of things in her life. For example, she would stress about fearing failure, about the mistakes she thinks she has made in her life, worrying about what people think of her or would see a needle and freak out thinking she might get pricked by that needle.

Her sleep would be broken waking up many times worrying “Have I done this…”, “Have I offended someone…”, “Will I get cancer…” etc.

She has been anxious since her teens, panicking about little things and her health.

She describes herself as an emotional eater tending to put weight on to numb out these feelings she gets.

She was living in the country and moved to the city. Now she worries about getting attacked or getting lost. “Is it safe where I am going?”

Her digestion is not good, with constant churning felt in the stomach. She is also prone to menstrual pain with her periods and is emotional.

Treatment:
Over a three month period managed to bring the anxieties under control as well as her digestion and eating habits. She began to feel more in control, less emotional and more trusting in herself. Overall, her confidence greatly improved.

4.    Chronic Anxiety with Frequent Urination

Male aged 52yrs old.

Presenting complaint: Suffers from a great deal of anxiety, poor sleep and frequently urinating every 10 minutes whenever he becomes anxious.

Sleep: He rarely sleeps the whole night through if he is anxious. He is very sensitive to noises at night when trying to sleep; any slight sound can suddenly wake him up. “Sudden noises can make me startle. Any noise just startles me and I suddenly rise up in fright and have to go to the toilet.” “If I have something on the next day, when I go to sleep, I wake up every hour.”

Urinary frequency: Especially < when he has to do anything like going out or involved with social situations. Here he may need to go to the toilet every 10 minutes or so until he can calm himself down. Whilst waiting in the reception for his appointment he visited the toilet twice.

Other complaints: Back muscles go into spasms that can last up to a week, the muscles just cramp up. Massage and osteopathic treatment helps but it still comes back. Meditation helps with the back spasms and anxieties. He has a tendency to migraines around 2 per year, from sudden changes of light.

He has also developed tinnitus of the right ear for the last 5 years.

Childhood:  At home there was a lot of violence, his parents were alcoholic. “My sensitivity to noise I can remember my father with heavy footsteps coming to get me.”

He remembered the arguments his parents used to have, he would wake up screaming on hearing them argue and would be yelling at them to try and stop. His father was a poor communicator and his mother would just shut down in order to cope with the situation.

His father worked out of town during the week and only home on the weekends. He was brought up by his grandmother during his teens but had to nurse her as she had a dreadful facial cancer. This reinforced the view he had of life that “the world was a cruel place”. He found it difficult to relate to the world. He wanted to hide away from it all and not be around people so that the world would not bother him. “The perfect place for me would be a park, somewhere in nature where no triggers would cause my physical symptoms to occur”.

He becomes introverted when in relationships. He finds it hard to be affectionate. He has been married twice and divorced both times. His first marriage lasted six months as his wife became alcoholic and was unfaithful. His second marriage lasted 5 yrs.

In my childhood, most embarrassing time for me was when I was at school I tended to wet my pants. When in social situations I become embarrassed. I just feel down because I can’t get on top of it.

His belief about life is that it is cruel to you.

Treatment:
After the first treatment he felt very focussed and in the present, (previously used to always think about the past or the future).

The urging to urinate stopped and nervousness began to improve. The back spasms have gone. Mentally felt much more confidant and the anxiety much better. Slept the whole night through. He started to become more active around people, wanting less isolation.

Over the next couple of months he had some ups and downs but over-all continued to maintain his improvement. He stopped treatment then.

5.    A Case of Acute Grief Following Relationship Separation

Male aged 39yrs old, doctor.

Presents in an acute crisis following the separation from his wife. He has become extremely emotional feeling that he can’t control his emotions. He is feeling tearful, anxious, panicky, chest pain and poor concentration.

He had only recently divorced and since then the emotions have intensified. Up until that time he felt that the relationship was possibly repairable. Since it becoming final for him he has become an emotional mess.

There were cultural differences with his mother-in-law influencing his wife which eventually led to an on-going conflict that led to the relationship breaking down.

He tends to become angry and aggressive in his temperament as well as impatient and critical.

Having lost his wife brings up panic and loneliness. His biggest fear is being on his own and this makes him depressed.

His childhood was not happy. His father was very strict and was frequently beaten by him. He felt very lonely and was never able to become close with anyone.

Treatment:
He was prescribed his homeopathic medicine and immediately started to feel better. His fear, panic and chest pain all lifted. His emotional state settled so that the teariness, anger and emotional volatility eased right up.

He felt that he was able to deal with his life more effectively and felt more in control with his feelings to be able to constructively deal with his current life situation.

After a couple of treatments he felt strong enough to continue without any further homeopathic medication.

The above case was an edited version that was published in the International Homeopathic Journal, Homeopathic Links.

6.    Chronic Anxiety with Irrational Thoughts

Female in her early twenties, a university student who suffered with chronic anxiety. She had always felt anxious, but it went through phases, where she will be OK for a period of time then it would come back. When she felt really unsure about something it could trigger a panic feeling.

She was also prone to developing irrational thoughts. She says it felt like she “loses any sense of rationality” as she worked herself into a state. She started stressing about all the mistakes she had made in her life, of becoming a failure, or if she saw a needle she would freak out that she might be pricked by that needle. She also worried what people would think of her. She would also wake in the middle of the night with thoughts about ‘what if…I’ve done this…or if I have offended someone… or do I have cancer?’.

Her anxiety had been with her since her early teens. She used to cope with the feelings by eating, to try and numb out the feelings. Her digestion was not good. She got churning pains in her stomach with a lot of bloating and gas.

She was also prone to PMT with her periods and chest tightness intermittently.

Treatment:
Homeopathic treatment helped her resolve the anxiety as she became more confident in herself, more in charge of her thought processes and better able to let go of the pressure that used to build up inside that would eventually trigger an anxiety attack. Her digestion and menses also settled down.

7.    Phobia- Signing My Name

Female social worker, in her early twenties suffered with a phobia for the last three or four years that occurred whenever she publicly had to sign her name, e.g. in banks or at work. She became anxious when attention was directed at her and would then develop palpitations and feel faint.

As the symptoms intensified, she would feel frightened, nervous, feel internally blocked off as well as becoming conscious that people would see her, feeling conspicuous, overwhelmed and panicky.

Generally she lacked confidence in front of people with the tendency to be quieter. This is especially the case when she is around people who are in a higher position than her at work, or who have more experience than she does.

She was also prone to headaches, PMT with her periods as well as a tendency to feel depressed at times.

Treatment:
After a couple of months of homeopathic treatment she started to feel more confident. The anxieties lifted and the headaches and PMT also improved.

She was still prone to relapses, but with over a year of homeopathic treatment she had a more relaxed attitude about talking in groups and felt more empowered when at work with her superiors so that she could put her point of view across without feeling intimidated.
